Clarence and Richmond Examiner - (Grafton 1889-1915) - Saturday 30 November 1889, p 4.

Death of Another old Resident

It is with, feelings of regret that we announce the demise of an old and esteemed resident of the district, in the person of Mr. John Connor, which took place on Thursday evening in the 79th year of his age.

Deceased was a colonist of about 50 years standing, 30 years of which had been spent on the Clarence. After arrival in the colony Mr. Connor settled on the Williams River, and was amongst the first settlers that came to the Clarence from that district, when its rich lands were first taken up.

Deceased acquired a valuable property near Swan Creek, and for a number of years resided on it, with his wife and three sons.

On the occasion of two of the latter (Rev. G. Connor, of Victoria, and Dr. Connor, of Coraki) going home to pursue a collegiate course, Mr. Connor and Mrs. Connor accompanied them. He remained for a brief period in the old country, where Mrs. Connor died.

Deceased after his return resided for several years at Clarenza, and finally came to Grafton, where he remained till his death. He was ordinarily of a robust constitution, but for the past two or three months the infirmities of advanced age began to tell, and it was. soon apparent that the end was near.

Deceased was very much respected for his genial disposition, and leaves a large circle of friends, being widely known throughout the district. He also leaves numerous relatives, most of whom are on the Clarence.

Mr. H. Connor, of the Coldstream is the sole surviving brother, and Mrs. J. Miller, of Corndale, Ulmarra, is a sister of deceased. One of his sons, Mr. M. Connor, resides at Clarenza. The mortal remains of deceased will be interred in the Grafton Cemetery to-day.

DEATH OF MR. JOHN CONNOR, SEN. - The Grafton Argus of Friday says :- "We regret to announce the decease of another old Clarence pioneer - Mr. John Connor - who died at his residence, Dobie-street, yesterday evening, in the 79th year of his age. The deceased gentle- man formerly resided at Clarenza, where he acquired a competency, and was always highly esteemed for his upright dealings. " Mr. Connor was father of Dr. Connor, of Coraki, and the Rev. G. Connor, of Victoria.

158 ATLAS 1

Richard Brooks is said to have had little formal education before entering the British East India Company's service at an early age, rising to command his own ship. During the first French Revolutionary War he traded to Oporto, the Mediterranean and the Baltic, carrying a letter of marque, but later returned to the East India service.

He began his association with New South Wales in 1802 when he captained the convict transport Atlas I.

The 222 day voyage of the "Atlas I" was one of the worse in the history of transportation to Australia. During the voyage 64 people died, another four dying shortly after disembarkation. The remainder were "in a dreadfully emaciated and dying state" (Governor King). Governor King asked a committee of enquiry whether Captain Brooks' private trade goods which took up space in the hospital and prison and the unnecessary stops en route to Australia contributed to the deaths. The committee stated that mortality had been caused by "the want of proper attention to cleanliness, the want of free circulation of air, and the lumbered state of the prison and hospital".

Convicts embarked - 151 male convicts and 28 female convicts
Convicts relanded while still in English waters - 3
Convicts died on the voyage - 65
Sailed from Cork, Ireland on 29 November 1801
Arrived in Sydney, New South Wales on 7 July 1802
